Planet Upgrades Crop Biomass Planetary Variable to Include Daily PlanetScope Data

Crop biomass in agricultural fields is highly dynamic and changes throughout the growing season as plants grow, encounter stressors, and approach harvest.

Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL), a leading provider of daily data and insights about Earth, today announced improvements to its Crop Biomass Planetary Variable, including the integration of its daily, global PlanetScope data. Crop Biomass is a cloud-free, analysis-ready data product for monitoring agricultural fields that combines radar and optical signals to help agronomists and farmers better understand the status of their operations.

Crop biomass in agricultural fields is highly dynamic and changes throughout the growing season as plants grow, encounter stressors, and approach harvest. Timely and frequent access to crop biomass data is essential for understanding these dynamics and making informed decisions regarding crop management, scouting, and intervention.

Crop Biomass is delivered daily, giving users complete and reliable data that results in a full time series. Access to this detailed and timely information can help farmers and agronomists better detect and respond to stressors such as pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies, optimize their fertilizer inputs, improve harvest planning and efficiency, and much more.

"Our Crop Biomass dataset has become an important tool for farmers looking to streamline their operations as it provides detailed, reliable, and timely crop health data to help with decision making," said Ariel Zajdband, Planet's Product Manager for Agriculture.

Planet customer Disagro shared, "Crop Biomass is a highly valuable and complementary service for us and our clients whose areas of focus are often affected by high cloud cover. Strategic partners like Planet provide us with the technical support needed to increase the usability of satellite imagery and bring digital agriculture practices to our regions under management."

Crop Biomass is delivered through Planet's subscription API, with the option for users to import the data directly into Sentinel Hub's EO Browser, which was acquired by Planet in 2023. Photophyllâ„¢ Select from CREE LED

Photophyll Select is a new phosphor-converted LED color with blue and green spectral output tuned for horticulture applications. These LEDs are designed to replace the white LEDs that are common in two-channel white + red horticulture luminaires. By maximizing green content and minimizing red content versus standard lighting LEDs, this LED color enables significant enhancements to luminaire cost and performance. Photophyll Select LEDs are the industry's first LEDs to be entirely binned in horticulture metrics, enabling more straightforward spectrum design without confusing translations or conversions. The spectral output of these LEDs is binned into two metrics, both of which are based on the amount of PPF in standard Blue (400-499 nm), Green (500-599 nm) and Red (600-700 nm) bands. The two spectral metrics are percentage of Red PPF content and the ratio of Green to Blue PPF content.
